Trian

www.LizCarroll.com | www.DaithiSproule.com | Billy McComiskey at Compass Records

Trian is an internationally acclaimed trio considered a “dream team” of Irish musicians. American-based Trian has appeared at folk festivals and concerts since 1985. Two hold senior All-Ireland titles, still without equal as players and tunesmiths, and all three are highly influential (and emulated) exponents of their craft. Dirty Linen Magazine describes the group as “perhaps the last word on Irish ensemble playing these days... the feel they have for the music and its nuances is unparallelled.” Trian produced two recordings: Trian (1992, nominated for a Grammy Award) and Trian II (1995) to wide critical and popular acclaim, solidifying the group’s status as one of the very finest Irish music bands, executing both exquisitely powerful renditions of old tunes and insightful composition of new classics.

TrianBilly McComiskey is the finest B/C box player and composer of Irish traditional music to have emerged from the States. His excellent technique and energy-driven syle contradict the long held tenet that one must be born and reared in Ireland to play Irish traditional music properly A Brooklyn native, in his early teens Billy began studying accordion with the late Sean McGlynn from Galway. Billy won the Senior All-Ireland Championship on button box, and has formed and played with two legendary trios: The Irish Tradition and the internationally acclaimed Trian. He is known on both sides of the Atlantic as an indefatigable session player, teacher, and promulgator of the music. A staunch proponent of Irish traditional music and culture, McComiskey is credited with playing a central role in the revitalization of the traditional music scenes of D.C. and Baltimore during the past 33 years.

Since she won the Junior and Senior All-Ireland Championships on the fiddle at the age of 18, Chicago-native Liz Carroll has been amazing audiences throughout the States, Ireland and Europe, and Africa. Her recordings and appearances on concert stages, television and radio, have established Liz as one of traditional music's most sought after performers. Liz is undoubtedly the finest Irish fiddler to come from the States, and her original compositions find their way into the collective repertoire of Irish musicians worldwide. In 1994, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Liz a National Heritage Fellowship for her great influence on Irish music in America, as a performer and a composer. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton presented the award which bestows national recognition on artists of international stature.

Dáithí Sproule of Derry has lived for many years in Minnesota. He is one of Irish music's most respected guitar accompanists, and one of the first guitarists to develop DADGAD tuning for Irish music.  Dáithí is also a fine singer in English and Irish who was a member of multiple highly influential traditional music groups, including Skara Brae, Bowhand, Trian, Fingal, the Irish supergroup Altan, as well as providing accompaniment for recordings by Tommy Peoples, Seamus and Manus McGuire, Liz Carroll, Paddy O’Brien, and others.  Dáithí is known for his innovative arrangements of traditional songs and original compositions. In addition to performing and recording, Dáithí is a sought-after teacher and lecturer in subjects ranging from guitar styles and song accompaniment to Irish traditional music, language, and literature.
